Noisy, brilliant, and full of contrasts – this is how the largest and most developed Chinese city, Shanghai, can be briefly described. In such a city, there is one place, perhaps the only one in China, that brings together lovers of some past times but also good food. Yugo Grill restaurant is hidden at the other end of the city, opposite the famous Shanghai Tower and the Bund.
For five years now, the famous Balkan food restaurant has been on the must-visit list in Shanghai for all people from “our” areas.
This story, which continues successfully to this day, began out of pure enthusiasm, nostalgia, and love for our home countries.
Since I was away from my Podgorica, the former Titograd, for more than two months, I didn’t even think of just passing by Yugo Grill in Shanghai. The tastes of kebabs, burgers, šopska salad and brandy immediately reminded me of the warmth of home and gave me new energy. And this place truly exudes such an atmosphere as if you are at home.
It is important to say that the “Yugo grill” restaurant not only brings together Yugo nostalgics and lovers of Balkan food. At the moment when my colleagues and I enjoyed the flavours of our homeland, we could hear Chinese or Spanish.
Maybe all these people do not know much about Yugoslavia and how people used to live there, but they will definitely return to this place if they have tried the famous barbecue, goulash, Karađorđeva schnitzel or fried cheese just once.
I am glad to see that foreigners enjoy the flavours that still unite most Balkan countries today. Although Chinese food offers countless options and every bite tells its own story, I admit that everyone enjoys this culinary escape and change.
At the Yugo grill restaurant, you will be greeted by smiling faces of employees and walls decorated with posters, unusual and unique details, as well as murals. So you can see some of the most famous lines from the play “Radovan III” where the main role for years belonged to the legendary actor Zoran Radmilović, as well as recognizable scenes from cult films such as “Ko to tamo peva”, “Valter brani Sarajevo”, “Maratonci trče počasni krug” and many others.
I would say that the entire concept of this place is a tribute to some past times and awakens nostalgia, which is often mentioned with Yugoslavia. I didn’t remember it, but from history and tradition, Yugoslavia was a dream of brotherhood and unity, regardless of all the differences, a country where the mountains spoke in six languages, and the sea kissed three coasts.
More or less, we can all agree that this dream, to the greatest extent, overcame and extinguished nationalism. But this place is, without regard to everything, just a cult and homage to those beautiful things that this strong state has produced. It is almost unbelievable that in a magnificent city of contrasts like Shanghai, where past and future are intertwined, there is a place like this.
From the experience of people who have been visiting Yugo grill for years, this is more than a “tavern” – it is an escape from reality, a haven for local humour and jokes and a return “home”, at least for a while. That’s why it’s not surprising that in addition to all the world’s wonders and locations, for us, people from the Balkans, this is an unavoidable stop and attraction.
