Connected Algeria Conference hosted, among many excellent guest, two Slovenian experts. One of them was Marko Grobelnik, AI Researcher & Digital Champion of Slovenia at EC.
Markos’ presentation was titled: AI as a New Kind of Science: A Strategic Opportunity for Algeria, and this renowned Slovenian scholar opened his interesting lecture by highlighting that Artificial Intelligence is rapidly evolving into a new scientific paradigm—distinct from traditional technologies—with the power to transform economies and societies.

In a recent briefing by Marko Grobelnik of the Jozef Stefan Institute and UNESCO IRCAI, AI is framed not only as a technological tool but as a new mode of discovery with far-reaching implications.
Marko Grobelnik emphasizes that while foundational AI development is dominated by global tech leaders, there remains a significant opportunity for countries like Algeria to innovate by building locally relevant AI applications.
His key recommendations included investing in domestic talent, fostering local AI solutions in sectors such as agriculture and health, building strategic research and policy networks, and engaging with international AI bodies.
“To stay competitive, Algeria must act decisively, ensuring agile governance, strategic infrastructure investments, and a proactive national AI strategy.
The report highlights that the window of opportunity is open—but narrowing. Speed and adaptability will define future AI sovereignty,” concluded Grobelnik.
