On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 6 pm, the University of Ljubljana AGRFT, in cooperation with the Embassy of Georgia, will be screening two masterpieces from the treasury of Georgian cinema in the Kinofilm series.
The first film is SERENADE (Georgia, 1968, 28 min, English subtitles), directed by Kartlos Hotivari, and is considered one of the foundations of Georgian short film. In the work, shot in the style of silent burlesque, a strong man and a skinny man compete for the affection of a beautiful colleague, with their conflict becoming increasingly violent and absurd.
The second is AN UNUSUAL EXHIBITION (Arachveulebrivi gamopena / An Unusual Exhibition, Georgia, 1968, 94 min, English subtitles) by Eldar Šengelaja, and it is a tragicomedy about a rural sculptor, Aguli, who returns from World War II wounded, but full of artistic ideals. A block of Greek marble, given to him by his late professor, awaits him at home. Aguli dreams of carving his life’s masterpiece from it, but his father convinces him that art does not bring bread. He advises him to take advantage of the high demand and start carving tombstones for wealthy compatriots. The film is rightly considered one of the most important and stylistically most perfect works of the golden age of Georgian cinema.
