The Heat of Havana and European Sophistication Will Shine Together on Stage with EuroCubans

The ensemble blends rhythms, traditions, and generations to create a musical experience that is both a tribute to heritage and an inspiration for the present. You can hear them live on July 13 at 9 PM on the Summer Theatre Stage at Križanke.
A Musical Bridge Between Two Continents
The EuroCubans music ensemble is a unique international project that brings together top musicians from Europe and Cuba. It was founded by Slovenian percussionist Črt Pšeničnik and legendary Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González – an icon of Cuban music known for Buena Vista Social Club, Afro-Cuban All Stars, and his role in the animated film Vivo.
Their vision evolved into a 14-member orchestra, blending traditional son, bolero, Afro-Cuban jazz, and modern original compositions. EuroCubans offer the audience both a sonic and visual experience – combining the nostalgia of golden-era Havana music with contemporary Cuban creativity, infused with authentic Afro-jazz rhythms and contagious stage energy.
Recognized Names in The Cuban Music Scene
The group features many musicians who have performed with some of the most prestigious Latin music artists. Among them is trumpeter Juan Munguía, a two-time Grammy Award winner known for his work with Irakere, Dizzy Gillespie, Celia Cruz, and Paquito D’Rivera. Bassist Carlos del Puerto, also a Grammy winner and member of Irakere, boasts the longest artistic and teaching career among the ensemble members.
The band also includes González’s longtime collaborators from the Afro-Cuban All Stars, such as percussionist Pepe Espinosa (Conjunto Saratoga, B.B. King, Arturo Sandoval), pianist David Alfaro (La Banda JB de Juaquin Betancoirt), and vocalist José “Pepito” Gomez (Charanga Latina Orchestra, Habana Ensemble, Los Que Son Son).
Energy that Connects
Pšeničnik emphasizes that working with Cuban musicians brings a deeper understanding of the essence of music – total dedication and unity with the sound, and expression through the instrument. This approach is reflected in their performances, where sincere enthusiasm is passed on to the audience.
EuroCubans offer a comprehensive insight into both the tradition and modernity of Cuban music, creating a genuine and dynamic experience that bridges different musical worlds. As part of the 73rd Ljubljana Festival, they will fill Križanke with authentic Cuban rhythms on July 13 at 9 PM.
